JPG, PNG and WebP are cleaned without re-encoding: the image data is copied byte for byte, so there is no quality loss. AVIF and HEIC are re-encoded at maximum quality.

The ICC profile tells apps how to show the colours; removing it can change how the image looks.

    How it works

    Three steps, all on your own device.

    1. Step 1: Add images

      JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC (in Safari), up to 10 files. Each one shows its details at once.

    2. Step 2: Check the details

      Resolution, “Is it 4K?”, print sizes, camera, date and location. Images with a location are clearly flagged.

    3. Step 3: Clean and download

      Remove all metadata or only the location. The cleaned file is checked again, then you download it or the whole batch as a ZIP.

    Questions and answers

    What is image metadata?
    Information stored in the file next to the picture: the camera and lens, the date and time, exposure settings, the editing software and often the GPS location where the photo was taken. It is invisible when you look at the image but anyone who gets the file can read it.

    Does removing metadata reduce quality?
    Not for JPG, PNG and WebP: the tool copies the image data byte for byte and only drops the metadata blocks around it. AVIF and HEIC cannot be cleaned that way in a browser, so they are re-encoded at maximum quality, and the tool says so.

    How do I know the location is really gone?
    After cleaning, the tool reads the new file again with the same reader and shows what is left: location, camera data, XMP and the colour profile. You can also drop the cleaned file back in to see its details.

    Why keep the colour profile?
    The ICC profile tells apps which colours the numbers in the file mean. Photos from recent phones often use a wide-gamut profile such as Display P3; without it, colours can look duller. It contains no personal information.

    What does “Is it 4K?” check?
    Whether the longer side of the image is at least 3,840 pixels, the width of a 4K UHD screen. If it is shorter, “Upscale to 4K” opens the upscaler in a new tab with the same image, without uploading it anywhere.
